A History of Mountains and People

Appalachia’s unique interdisciplinary approach has attracted funding as well as enthusiasm from organizations across the region and the country. Early support from the National Science Foundation allowed us to develop our ideas about natural history and human culture in the script. The National Science Foundation continued their support of the film with a major grant for production. The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations generously supported the series with a capstone grant.

The National Endowment for the Humanities through a Chairman’s Grant provided funding for the filming of initial interviews and with a scripting grant supported research and script development. The Cherokee Preservation Foundation and the Appalachian Regional Commission also helped underwrite the series and public outreach.

The initial stages of the project were made possible by grants from the state humanities groups in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania as well as from the Tennessee Arts Commission. Competitive awards from the Southern Humanities Media Fund supported production of Part One and Part Four.

Oregon Public Television will be the presenting station for the series when it airs in early 2009.
